Kind Donation: Charities help each other

Pete the farmer who runs the Livery Stables at Puxley, kindly donated and delivered 21 tons of top-quality matured horse manure to Deanshanger Allotments yesterday. In commercial terms, this would normally cost £300.

Pete hosts riding experiences for the Riding for the Disabled Charity at his stables. This is their website

Pete’s colleague Tina has written to me today to say that the chairperson of the Charity is extremely grateful to Pete for his suggestion of donations to the charity in return for the manure he delivered.

Tina, who has been a helper and trustee of the charity for 20 years, says “it is so rewarding seeing the children and adults enjoying riding the horses and how much the interaction benefits them”.

The charity’s bank details are –

Account name: Bucks & Greenacres Group Riding for the Disabled
Sort code: 30-15-53
Account number: 01244758

Please make a donation, however small, to this worthwhile charity for any manure you take to use on your plot.

If we all make a donation, not only will we be improving our soil quality and crop yield, but we will be supporting a very worthwhile local charity and enabling Deanshanger Allotments to make a similar arrangement with Pete every year.

Pete can also supply woodchip in lieu of donations to this worthwhile charity.

Thank you.

Pollarding Willows along Canal Walk

A huge thank you to Luke Costello for pollarding the willow trees along Canal Walk free of charge. They are situated within a strip of land that is outside our Church Lane site perimeter fence. We don’t use the land but it legally belongs to Deanshanger Allotments so we are responsible for ensuring that the trees do not pose any risk to the general public.

Not only did Luke pollard the trees, he wove an attractive fence alongside to utilise the branches, and created two hedgehog habitats alongside our perimeter fence to encourage hedgehogs into our site.

Luke also mows the grass track at our Northfields site. In previous years you may have seen him mowing the grass in the village with his dog on his sit-on mower. Luke grew up in Deanshanger and is always willing to lend a hand to help good causes.

Well done Luke – very much appreciated! Really kind of you!
